S.D. and Willie Ruth Moon

Singer Duvall Moon hated his name and refused to tell most people what it was. He was known his entire life as S.D. Moon - with one exception. When S.D. went into the Army during World War I, they insisted that he give his name. Not his initials. S.D. stubbornly refused (now you know where I get my stubborn streak!). Finally, his commanding officer had had enough. "OK, your name is Samuel David Moon from here on."

When S.D. died, he was buried at the National Cemetary in Marietta, and his tombstone reads Samuel David Moon.

Willie Ruth Foster married S.D. when he got out of the Army. I do not know very much about either of them as they both died before I was born. I did discover letters that S.D. wrote to Ruth while he was in the army - watch this blog for more as I learn about my grandfather through his letters.
